That’s a question a recent study dug into, specifically looking at pre-service teachers (PSTs) and their experience with AI in scientific writing. A German study found that almost everyone has heard of GenAI, and a huge chunk are actually using it for both academic and personal stuff. But that brings us back to the big question: how different are they, quality-wise, and can we even tell who wrote what?

Putting Texts to the Test

To get a handle on this, the study I’m talking about involved 39 pre-service teachers. They were tasked with writing an essay themselves and also generating a couple of essays on the same topic using different AI tools. The topic was “Digital media in primary education—potentials and risks,” with a word limit of around 200 words. After anonymizing everything, the PSTs then got two random texts (either human or AI) to evaluate.

They assessed these texts based on several criteria, using a scale from zero (worst) to six (best). These criteria covered things like:

  • Topic and completeness
  • Logic and composition
  • Expressiveness and comprehensiveness
  • Language mastery
  • Complexity
  • Vocabulary and text linking
  • Language construction

They also had to guess if the text was written by a human or AI, and later, they shared their thoughts on how useful they found AI in different stages of the writing process.

The Results Are In!

Alright, drumroll please… when it came to guessing who wrote the text, the PSTs were right about two-thirds of the time (66.67%). This tells us that while AI texts aren’t *always* fooling us, they’re often good enough to make it tricky to tell the difference. Maybe we’re not quite trained yet to spot the subtle tells, or maybe the AI is just getting *that* good.

Now, for the quality comparison. The study used statistical tests to see where the significant differences lay. And guess what? AI-generated texts performed significantly better in a couple of key areas:

  • Logic and composition: AI texts had a better logical structure. This is a big plus, especially for functional or academic writing where clarity and flow are crucial.
  • Language mastery: AI texts showed better command of language, likely due to spot-on grammar and syntax. AI is just really good at getting the rules right.

In other areas, like topic completeness, expressiveness, comprehensiveness, complexity, vocabulary, and language construction, the differences weren’t statistically significant. This could be because the texts were quite short, or maybe the sample size wasn’t huge. But it does suggest that while AI nails the structure and grammar, it might not necessarily add more depth, complexity, or unique vocabulary compared to human writers, at least not in short bursts.

Overall, the quantitative results lean towards AI texts having higher quality in terms of structure and language correctness. This backs up other studies that found AI surpassing human-written essays in quality evaluations.

How Teachers See It

Beyond just the cold, hard data, what do the folks actually using this stuff think? The PSTs in the study shared their perceptions on how useful GenAI is in different phases of writing. And they see a lot of potential!

They rated AI as particularly effective for:

  • Finding arguments: This got the highest rating. Students clearly find AI a great tool for brainstorming and generating points for their texts.

However, opinions were more divided on other aspects. When it came to help with precise formulation and error prevention, the ratings were lower and more varied. While more than half still saw it positively for error prevention (maybe “error correction” would have been a better term?), it wasn’t seen as universally strong as idea generation or structuring.

So, while AI is seen as a very useful support tool across the board, its superpowers seem to be in getting you started, helping you organize, and giving you ideas, rather than necessarily finessing every single word or catching every tiny mistake (though it’s still pretty good at the latter).

The Big Picture: Benefits and Bumps

AI can speed up research and free up time for deeper analysis, which could actually promote critical thinking if used correctly. But there’s also the risk of students just hitting ‘generate’ and submitting the result without engaging with the material.

Educational institutions are grappling with this. We need to figure out how to integrate AI in a way that enhances learning without undermining those crucial skills. It means adapting how we teach, how we assign work, and how we evaluate it. It also means training future teachers (and current ones!) not just on how to use AI, but how to use it responsibly and critically.
